Working primarily in charcoal I create peices that balance realism with abstraction.
Much of my esthetic was shaped in my childhood years. Influenced by the nature that surounded me as well as my fathers photography, particularly pictures he took of my mother.
I am drawn to images that celebrate the feamle form in a seductive and powerful way. I explore using the light and shadows on the body to break up the figure, and integrate natural elements in an organic way, adding movement and further abstraction to the piece.
My background in graphic design and knowledge of visual problem solving help me create pieces that are visually balanced and compelling. I mockup my ideas digitally before executing them, exploring different variations and layouts.
My love of textiles lead me to drawing on fabric. The woven flexible material feels very comfortable and organic to me. I smudge and blend the charcoal deep into the fibers to the point where the fabric almost seems stained with charcoal. Using charcoal also allows me to acheive the level of rich darkness and contrast I want in my work.
I find peace, freedom, and excitment while making my art. It is an escape that energizes and transports me.
